Reintroduction of Kerbside Recycling in Braddan – Thursday 21 May

A limited kerbside recycling service will commence in Braddan from this week.

Please note that the recycling day is changing to a THURSDAY.

The first collection will be this Thursday, 21 May 2020.

Initially the service will be for glass bottles and cans only, and we would gratefully request that both materials are rinsed and placed in separate boxes.

Please do not leave any recycling out in bags, use you boxes and/or trolleys only.

The reason for this temporary change is to eliminate the risk of handling material which could be contaminated with the virus.

Having boxes contain a single material type enables the content to be tipped direct in to the hopper without needing to separate by hand.

23 April 2020 – Local Authority Waste Services


Over the next few days the Local Authorities on the Isle of Man will be ready to re-open the four Civic Amenity sites around the island

The Eastern and Western sites will open at 8am on Friday morning and the Northern and Southern sites at 10am on Saturday morning.

Please be aware that the Northern site will operate on an appointments system accessed using their website or by ringing 810100, whilst the Eastern, Southern and Western sites will operate on a queuing system using the roadway leading to the site.

Due to operational issues the opening hours and the types of waste that can be disposed of may vary slightly, but they will all take burnable household waste and green waste.  This is not business as usual, so to avoid an unnecessary journey please ring your local authority or check their website or Facebook page for details.

It is important that people work within the social distancing guidelines and therefore there will be a restricted number of vehicles on site.

The staff will do everything possible to manage this situation smoothly but they will not be able to assist you with your items so please bring a household member to help you if you cannot manage on your own.

The Re-use sheds will remain closed for the time being but the recycle Bring Banks around the island will open on Friday.

Please be careful when driving in these areas, expect queues over the first few weeks and be patient.

The Authorities understand how frustrating this has been for everyone and thank you for your co-operation.

For Braddan residents please see information below regarding the opening of the Eastern Civic Amenity Site on Friday 24 April:-

The Eastern Civic Amenity Site will reopen on Friday 24th April from 8am.

Opening hours are:

• Monday to Saturday 08:00 – 18:00 (last entry 17:45)
• Sundays and early May bank holiday (Friday 8th May) 08:00 – 16:00 (last entry 15:45)

Restrictions will be in place regarding the number of vehicles allowed on site at any time. The existing height barrier restriction will remain in place for large vans and trailers entry for these vehicles is permitted on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday afternoons.

Only the following waste types will be initially accepted.

• General Household waste (This excludes builders type waste, tiles, plasterboard etc.)
• Green Garden waste.
• Scrap Metal

Initially, there will be no facility for recycling or for disposing of fridges, freezers, TV’s, monitors and the re-use area will remain closed. However, this will be continually reviewed and other waste streams introduced as circumstances and capacity permit.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to assist with unloading of vehicles during this period, so consider bringing someone from your household to assist with unloading where applicable.

We would also ask those visiting the site to support the staff while vehicle numbers are restricted and to be patient should queues build up. These are extraordinary times that require extraordinary measures and it’s up to everyone to play their part if we are to return gradually to a more “normal” way of life. We would also like to thank the public for their cooperation and understanding during the closure

As a final note, we would remind you that no person who is currently self-isolating, symptomatic or has tested positive for COVID 19 should attend the site”.

As tomorrow is the first of these collections, we would be grateful if you could please remember to put your wheelie bins out tonight (Wednesday 8 April) as our new contractor (Kinrade Bros. Haulage Ltd) starts at 5am and we want to ensure that everyone bins are emptied.

Braddan Commissioners’ Refuse Collections – Keep our Refuse Collectors Safe


  • Our refuse collectors are key workers, working hard to ensure the continued collection of your household waste.
  • Help our collectors stay safe by using anti-bacterial spray or detergent to wipe down your wheelie bin handles before and after collection.
  • Please don’t overfill your bin, and make sure the lid is down properly, and do not leave extra waste on the side.
  • If you have been tested for Covid-19, or are showing symptoms, or awaiting test results, we need you to take some extra steps when it comes to your household waste.
  • Please ensure tissues and disposable cleaning cloths are stored within disposable rubbish bags. Place these bags into another bag and tie securely.
  • Put aside separately from your other waste for at least 72 hours before putting in your usual household waste bin.
  • Please sort your waste to separate glass and tins and keep to one side (where possible) for future collection.
  • Flatten all plastic and cardboard to create extra space in your bins.
  • Compost waste where possible and if not, keep it to one side for future collection.

25 March 2020 – Braddan Commissioners Covid 19 Update



Unfortunately we must announce that after today’s recycling collection (Wednesday 25 March 2020), Braddan Commissioners’ recycling collection will be suspended until further notice.

Douglas Borough Council had been awarded the recycling contract from 1st April 2020, however due to the pressures on staff with the developing Covid 19 Pandemic, it is simply not possible for them to carry out the recycling at this time. We hope to resume the recycling service in the future.

In the meantime, if you are able to leave your property to go shopping or another essential activity, please consider taking your recycling with you and placing it in one of the many recycling bring banks on the island. If these are closed and you are unable to store your recyclable material, then regrettably you will have to place your recycling in your refuse bin.


Unfortunately the Commissioners have decided to close their play areas in Clybane and Snugborough Housing Estates and Cronk Grianagh Park with immediate effect, in line with the current social distancing recommendations and to curb the spread of Covid 19. Cronk Grianagh Parkland will remain open for the time being. Please respect this decision and keep your children away from others and the playground equipment until further notice. Signage will be put in place to this effect.


At the moment, we do not anticipate any disruption to the refuse collection, however this could be subject to change in the future, depending on how the Covid 19 situation develops.

Domestic refuse collections will continue as normal on a Tuesday for the majority of residents. Certain areas in Braddan are changing to a Thursday collection from 1st April 2020. Letters have already gone out to those areas that will be affected by this.

Our refuse contractors will follow the recommended government guidelines to assist with preventing the spread of disease.

Please note that there should be no side waste (ie bags of refuse) left next to the wheelie bin and bin lids should be closed to prevent rubbish blowing around. All waste should be bagged and placed in your bin.

COMMERCIAL REFUSE COLLECTIONS – There is no change to Commercial Refuse Collections.


If you believe you, or a member of your household have Covid 19, please take note of the following steps to protect our refuse contractors.

Cleaning and disposal of waste

  • Use your usual household products, such as detergents and bleach, as these will be very effective at getting rid of the virus on surfaces.
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces. Personal waste (such as used tissues) and disposable cleaning cloths can be stored securely within disposable rubbish bags.
  • These bags should be placed into a second bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste in the room in which you are self-isolating.
  • Keep all bagged waste aside for at least 72 hours before putting into your usual external household waste bin.
  • All waste must be bagged and inside the bin. No side waste will be collected throughout this crisis.

Advance Notice – Resurfacing of side roads – Snugborough Housing Estate, Union Mills

We have been advised by the DOI that they are planning to resurface the side roads within the Snugborough Housing Estate starting next week (W/C 28 October 2019).

The main part of Snugborough Avenue from the junction with the Peel Road will just be patched at this time. It will be resurfaced properly after we have completed the building works at Mullen Doway.

The Department will send out a mail drop to affected residents a week in advance with more information.

Charity Donations to the TT Riders Assocation & The Dan Kneen Charitable Fund

Braddan Commissioners’ Chairman, Andrew Jessopp presented representatives from the Dan Kneen Charitable Fund and the TT Riders Association with cheques for £361.50 each at their meeting on the 17 October.

The money was raised from racing fans during this year’s TT and Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling at the Commissioners’ Memorial Hall in Union Mills. The garden is always popular with spectators and the Commissioners open the hall for the use of Marshalls and fans free of charge.

Andrew Jessopp said “Braddan Commissioners have organised charity collections at the Memorial Hall for several years and we’re grateful to the fans who donated so generously to these worthwhile causes”.
